Lyon, who was previously demoted to Ligue 2 for financial violations, has successfully appealed and will remain in Ligue 1. According to the previous agreement with UEFA, Lyon will be allowed to participate in the UEFA UEFA Cup next season. The team newspaper reported that UEFA has put forward four years of strict requirements on Lyon, including immediate sanctions and possible future penalties, and may even be excluded from the European game unless the club can meet the requirements.
Under the agreement reached with UEFA on June 26, which included a fine of 50 million euros, of which 12.5 million were paid immediately, Lyon was able to participate in the European Championships in the 2025-2026 season. The agreement clearly states that Lyon's prerequisite for participating in European competitions this season is that it is re-adopted as a Ligue 1 team.
Another obstacle will be resolved in the next few days, namely the multiple ownership issue (part of the shares of both Lyon and Crystal Palace belonging to John Textor are about to be sold, and both teams have been eligible for the Europa League, which is a violation of the rules). Regardless, Lyon is safe in this regard, as they rank (sixth) higher in the domestic league than Crystal Palace (twelfth), so they are preferred to qualify for the UEFA Cup.
Although Lyon is currently allowed to participate in European competitions, UEFA has imposed severe fiscal austerity measures on it to avoid future bans.
Under the four-year agreement, the club promises to “provide an unqualified audit report to prove its ability to continue operations (the original Lyon’s accounts were not endorsed by the auditor), submit real and complete legal and financial information, and inject €60 million in cash by July 15, 2025 and convert into equity by October 15, 2025”.
