The Spanish media "AS" reported that Rodrigo will not give up easily and will continue to compete for playing time.
Rodrigo's future has not yet been determined, although he still has two and a half years left on his contract with Real Madrid (until June 30, 2028). His situation is quite difficult at the moment, but he is determined to turn it around. In reality, Rodrigo's role in the team is unimportant, a far cry from his desire this summer to instruct his agent not to listen to any offers, especially from the Premier League, in the hope of another success at Real Madrid. He was an important contributor to the 14th and 15th Champions League wins.
The reality is that Xabi Alonso has coached Real Madrid for 23 games (22 official games and 1 summer friendly game). Of all the possible minutes during this period, Rodrygo only participated in 25% of them. This meant he spent most of the game on the bench waiting for his chance. As for the number of starts, he only started 4 of those 23 games (against Riyadh Crescent, Real Oviedo, Marseille and Getafe).
In these 4 games, Rodrigo was replaced in the 63rd minute in 3 games and in the 86th minute in another game. In other words, he never played a full game in a game with Xabi Alonso as head coach. In 3 of his 19 substitute appearances, he did not get a minute of playing time (against Juventus, Osasuna and Real Sociedad).
Rodrigo said in an interview that during the Club World Cup, he talked with the head coach and agreed that he performed best on the left, but he also emphasized that "the most important thing is to help the team, and I will play according to the coach's requirements." In the first two months of the season, that's true. Rodrygo either starts or comes on the bench, taking Vinicius's place. But as opportunities have dwindled, his last few appearances have seen him deployed on the right, a position he held for years under Zidane and Carlo Ancelotti.
Sources close to Rodrygo insist that the player will not give up easily and he hopes to persuade Alonso to give him more playing time. But if his role remains so minor for the rest of the season, then at the end of the season Rodrygo will meet with the club to find a solution. With his youth and talent, he can't afford to continue wasting time on the bench.
Rodrigo joined Real Madrid from Santos in the summer of 2019 for 40 million euros. He came to Real Madrid a year later than Vinicius (the latter joined from Flamengo for 45 million euros). Rodrygo also played a few games at Castilla, giving him the chance to integrate into the club's winning culture. He has become a regular fixture in Zidane and Ancelotti's squad since the middle of the 2019-20 season.
During this period, Rodrigo won two Champions League titles (including two goals in two minutes against Manchester City), three La Liga titles, a Copa del Rey, three Spanish Super Cups, two European Super Cups, a Club World Cup and an Intercontinental Cup. These honors were achieved in 283 official games, the same number of games played by Hugo Sanchez at Real Madrid. Now he hopes to break his goal drought, as he has failed to score in 28 consecutive games since breaking through Atletico Madrid.
