Recently, Warriors forward Kuminga accepted an interview with Andscape.
Reporter: Coming from Africa and overcoming many challenges, have you ever stopped to reflect on your achievements?
Kuminga: People often only see the surface. They only know me as Jonathan Kuminga, that's it. Their vision is tunnel vision. So I'm not worried, I'm very at peace with myself. Looking back, I have come a long and difficult way. Regardless of success or failure, I am proud of myself. Because I come from a far away place. When I look back at where I started, there are very few people who have gotten to where I am now. Hopefully more people will be able to do it in the future. I have certainly come a long way.
Reporter: How would you describe this long journey?
Kuminga: I went from having nothing to achieving something. I'm a kid from a small place in the Congo. Very few people out there have a chance to succeed. Many people work hard, but there are not many opportunities. As I grow, I hope to provide opportunities for more people because I understand what it takes and I understand where I come from. Now I'm doing it. I have become more stable and have more peace of mind. I can do a lot and I'm working on it. One day I'm going to find some people and take them back to where I'm from and show them my history so people can really understand where I come from and what it means to be successful there.
Reporter: What do you hope to do in Congo from a charity perspective?
Kuminga: I have a foundation and we are working on it. I'm trying to figure out how to proceed. Build stadiums, build schools. This is much more important than many things. I feel like I need to sit down and focus more on this and find a way. This is not something that can be achieved overnight. So, we have to sit down and plan well.
Reporter: The late NBA superstar and philanthropist Dikembe Mutombo was from Congo. Did he inspire you?
Kuminga: He started all this. He helped so many people. We must follow in his footsteps.
